The Emergency Plan Most San Diego Families Forget: Your Documents

4% of Americans live in a county that's had a natural disaster in the last three years — and San Diego County is no exception, between wildfire season, flooding, and the occasional earthquake reminder. Most emergency plans stop at water, flashlights, and a meeting spot. They skip the one thing you'll actually need to rebuild your life afterward: your documents.

Why this matters more than people think

If you ever had to evacuate tonight, could you prove who you are, what you own, and what you're entitled to? Insurance claims, property disputes, and benefit applications all move faster — or stall completely — depending on whether you can produce the right paperwork. 71% of Americans admit they don't have a real emergency plan, and even among people who do, only 61% included their documents in it.

What belongs in your emergency documents checklist

●      Copies of your will, trust, power of attorney, and healthcare directive

●      A certified copy of your property deed (not a photocopy — insurers and courts want certified copies from the county recorder)

●      Insurance policy numbers and claims contact information

●      Passports, birth certificates, and Social Security cards

●      A written list of account numbers (not passwords) for your banks and investments

●      A note of where the original documents live, since this checklist covers copies
